The AGP-LMD is a component of the US Government’s Feed the Future (FtF) Initiative and constitutes a part of USAID’s contribution to the Government of Ethiopia’s Agricultural Growth Program (AGP).
As disease surveillance is a core activity of the Animal Health Directorate the overall objective was to improve planning and monitoring of animal disease control strategies. Specifically, it was to enable the development of software required for the innovative animal disease notification system (ADNS).
Working together with an expert from the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture I built and implemented this system under the USAID Agricultural Growth Livestock Market Development (AGP-LMD) Project. This allows vets based in remote areas to use mobile phones and data collection software to send in disease reports to a central database. These reports can trigger a series of notifications and/or actions depending upon the type of disease reported from the field.
